Genesis existed from 1967 to 2022 and were a three-piece band of Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks for most of their existence.
Peter Gabriel, Anthony Phillips, Chris Stewart. John Silver, John Mayhew, Steve Hackett and Ray Wilson were also members of the band at one time, the latter replaced Phil Collins for the studio album ‘Calling All Stations’.
During the 1980s and 90s, Phil Collins would have solo hits, Mike Rutherford had hits with ‘Mike and the Mechanics’ and Tony Banks had his acclaimed works with other artists, but Genesis still found themselves with hits.
It was their home of the UK where Genesis had their biggest success with five consecutive No. 1 studio albums between 1980 and 1991.
So here is a selection of hits from the 80s and 90s that I find great to listen to.
I Can’t Dance
The riff of this song was inspired by a Jeans ad and had the working title of ‘Blue Jeans’, the song was considered a joke recording until Tony Banks added keyboard sound effects to work with Mike Rutherford’s guitar playing that they had a song of more meaning which led to the song being a single.
It peaked at No. 7 in America, the UK and Australia and it was even performed on the Mickey Mouse Club (MMC) by members of the Mouseketeers.
I love the sound in this song, and I do find the music video quite amusing, they had put fun into most of their music videos.
Invisible Touch
‘Invisible Touch’ was Genesis’ only No. 1 single in America when it was released in 1986, it was their most successful song in Australia when it peaked at No. 3, it is quite a catchy song to listen to.
In the music video you see all three members playing something else than they usually do, another bit of fun for the band.
Land of Confusion
The mid to late 1980s saw music videos get more experimental, and ‘Land of Confusion’ was one of those music videos thanks to the use of puppets.
The song peaked at No. 4 in America and No. 21 in Australia with Top 10 peaks in six other countries.
The music video keeps up with the humour of other Genesis music videos as there are puppet versions of world leaders and superstars singing like they did when performing ‘We Are The World’.
The cover of the single is a parody of The Beatles 1963 studio album ‘With the Beatles’.
In Too Deep
‘In Too Deep’ was a song written for the British neo-noir film called Mona Lisa, a film that has Michael Caine as a gangster boss.
I like this song very much, it is a nice, easy song to listen to enjoy, it changes up the sound in this small collection of songs.
No Son of Mine
The song is about a boy who has run away from his abusive home, he then attempts to return to his home, but his father has effectively disowned him by saying that the boy is no son of his.
It is unknown whether the son or the mother is the victim of the abuse in the household.
The song you hear through the song is called ‘elephantus’ and when reading about it, it really does sound like an elephant though to me it sounded like something foreboding like a klaxon.
‘Elephantus’ was the working title of the song and ‘No Son Of Mine’ peaked at No. 12 in America and No. 6 in the UK and No. 29 in Australia.
Abuse is unacceptable in any home whether it is a partner abusing the other, both abusing each other, one or both abusing children or children abusing them and/or other children.
