Most people would think of the songs ‘Crazy’ or ‘Electric Blue’ when thinking of Icehouse (or their previous name Flowers), but they really had a lot more to offer than those two Top five hits.
Out of their seven studio albums, six of the albums peaked in the Top 10, their last album ‘Big Wheel’ in 1993 was the one that missed out, it had peaked at No. 44.
Four studio albums charting in the United States from No. 43 to No. 129, so they were known to the US especially when they performed for Johnny Carson.
They had six Top 10 singles and an addition seven songs in the Top 20 between 1980 and 1990 and here are five songs for you.
Here’s something for you, Icehouse frontman Iva Davies composed the music to the Peter Weir movie ‘Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World’ which starred Russell Crowe and it should have had a sequel as it was a great movie.
Here are my five favourite Icehouse songs.
Crazy
‘Crazy’ well this music video is very interesting and, in some ways, surprising they allowed it considering the woman seemed to be in the throes of pleasure sitting by herself but then again, the 80s were a more relaxed decade for music videos.
What’s to like about this song? That drum beat, the guitar playing, the lyrics, the backing vocals, everything.
Great Southern Land
If you want a song that sells the idea of Australia to people then this song for you, some people consider it our national anthem (others say You’re The Voice’).
People have a connection to this land we stand on, it doesn’t matter age, sex, skin colour, everybody feels it in some way.
Hey Little Girl
1982 was a great year for Icehouse, ‘Great Southern Land’ peaked at No. 5 and ‘Hey Little Girl’ peaked at No. 7.
The music video tells an interesting story, young man comes with flowers, he gets turned away as a young girl watches on, then it turns to a woman watching from the same window, drink in hand, cobwebs in the window, she has fallen quite far in life and then you see the story of how the woman was a ballerina and how she ended up in the state she was by the window.
We Can Get Together
‘We Can Get Together’ was Icehouse’s second single though back then the band was known as Flowers, it peaked at No. 16 in Australia, and it is a song that is catchy.
I hadn’t heard this song for a couple of years before writing this piece but as soon as I saw the title, I had to give it a play and add it to this list and I found it to be just as enjoyable as it was when I heard it regularly years ago.
Electric Blue
‘Electric Blue’ was Icehouse’s only single to reach No. 1 in Australia, it was their last Top 10 single with three songs landing in the Top 20.
The song peaked at No. 7 in the United States and was their best result in the USA, their second best was ‘Crazy’ at No. 14.
One of the great things about 80s songs was a saxophone solo and this song has one which may have added to its appeal.
