Bruce ‘The Boss’ Springsteen has been entertaining the world for over 50 years.
From September 1975 to 2022, only one Bruce Springsteen studio album has peaked outside the Top 10 in America, that’s 18 out of 19 studio albums being No. 10 or higher, nine of those studio albums hit No. 1 on the charts.
Only ‘The Ghost of Tom Joad’ has been out of the Top 10 and that album peaked at No. 11, that’s as close as you are going to get to a perfect record.
Bruce’s first single was ‘Blinded By The Light’ in 1972, this song was covered by Manfred Mann’s Earth Band in 1976 and hit No. 1 in the United States and No. 11 in Australia.
Born To Run
‘Born to Run’ was a 1975 release that didn’t get a music video release until a decade later, the song is simple in story, getting out of Freehold, car lovers do love this song, it has everything that they need in the song.
This song was Bruce’s first charting single, it peaked at No. 23 in the United States and No. 38 in Australia and the song has endured these last fifty years, it has achieved classic status.
Born in the U.S.A
‘Born in the U.S.A’ was a Top 10 hit in America in 1984, it was also a No. 2 hit in Australia and while it seems to be a song glorifying the United States, it is not as it is actually a critique of American policy and society, ait is about a Vietnam War veteran who is disillusioned, a tragic figure who was alienated after returning from the war.
This song seems to be loved by Republican leaders and before anybody gets angry, I’m Australian and both Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump used this song, and they are Republican.
Glory Days
Glory Days, say in our youth we’re good at something, we would be popular and successful and then suddenly we’re not so good anymore, school or college/university is over and we’re back to being mere mortals forever trying to get back to being good at what we were doing but never getting there meanwhile we’re thinking about those we grew up with, are they successful, are they happy, are they also looking for better?
This song from ‘Born in the U.S.A’ was Bruce’s fifth Top 10 single from the album in the USA and he had another two more to come, keeping him charting well in both 1984 and 1985.
When Secret Garden was released in 1995, it peaked at No. 92 in Australia, two years later it got another chance thanks to the movie Jerry Maguire and was far more successful, No. 7 to be exact.
There are quite a few interpretations of this song but basically it comes down that the woman in the song has a place in her that cannot be touched by others, it is all for her.
‘Streets of Philadelphia’ was Bruce’s last Top 10 single in America up to 2025, it peaked at No. 9 while in Australia it had peaked at No. 4 and the song was part of the Tom Hanks starring movie ‘Philadelphia’.
The music video sounds different to the recorded version because the vocals were recorded live by a hidden microphone, the music video was shot in Philadelphia as Bruce is seen walking past locations that say where he is.
