I was watching MTV 80s last night and Rick Astley was one of the artists who got their songs played in 50 karaoke songs and so it gave me the idea to do a post
You got to admire Rick, he was big in the late 80s, early 90s and then his fourth album Body & Soul doesn’t chart in the UK in 1993 and only got to No. 185 in America.
He is gone until 2001, charts again in the UK in 2005 then makes then makes the album ’50’ in 2016 and hits No. 1 and he has been around ever since from being with the Foo Fighters to being at Glastonbury.
Never Gonna Give You Up
Number 1 in Australia, the UK and America, it is the song that will not die and that’s good.
This song has lived on in so many ways, it has been performed with the Foo Fighters, it is inserted into videos as a joke, somebody even wrote out an entire page with the first word of each line, here’s my attempt of the first line.
Never has Pizza tasted so good
Gonna get me another piece
Give me that slice said a friend
You go get one yourself was my response
Up yours my friend said giving me the bird
Rick’s second No. 1 single in America, surprisingly only got to No. 19 in Australia as it is considered to be quite catchy.
Love this happy sounding kind of song which the late 80s were thankfully full of, love the part ‘Never Gonna Give, Never Gonna Give, Give You Up’
It is hard to pick a favourite, but I think this would have to be my favourite Rick Astley song, fans may have been surprised when Rick appeared with longer hair and a suit with a song that was different to his chart toppers.
Top 20 in Australia, Top 10 in the UK and America, No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary charts in Canada and America.
‘Whenever You Need Somebody’ delivered Rick the No. 3 position on the charts in the UK and Australia and No. 1 is German, Sweden and0 Switzerland.
Surprisingly this song was not released as a single in America, would have expected a release there, their loss though the internet has made up for it ever since.
Saw this music video on MTV 80s and thought that it was a great music video and enjoyable lyrics.
It only reached No. 41 in Australia, which is surprising, guess Australia got a little bored with Rick late in 1988 only to return in 1991 with the hit ‘Cry For Help’.
