There was quite a bit of choice regarding dance-pop, boy/girl band etc. music in the late 90s and early 00’s, Steps, Five, Backstreet Boys, Aqua, B*Witched, Boyzone and many others battling for supremacy in their corner of the music world.

Between 1997 and 2022, the group recorded seventeen Top 10 songs, fourteen of them came before the end of 2001 and it must be noted that Steps recorded here and there from 2002 compared to the fast pace of 1997-2001.

So here are my favourite four selections.

5, 6, 7, 8

Good old 5, 6, 7, 8, never seems to get old, it did make boot scooting interesting to people compared to the good old country songs, boot scooting was probably last popular mainstream wise with ‘Achy Breaky Heart’, was always amusing watching friends doing the moves especially if they didn’t know they were being watched.

Let’s begin the dance again.

Steps last Australian Top 10 song was a cover of the Bee Gees ‘Tragedy’, that song was released in 1998, ‘Tragedy’ was paired with ‘Heartbeat’ with UK music lovers loving it so much it hit No. 1.

It’s pretty risky covering a massive hit song like ‘Tragedy’ but Steps do the job just fine, love the updated version of the 70s sound.

‘One For Sorrow’ hit No. 34 in Australia but it was good enough to land on Hit Machine 22, the compilation CD of the hits of the time, they really did have great voices, and this song showcases it as it is quieter than the other songs.

‘Last Thing On My Mind’ hit No. 5 making it two Top 5 results from two singles, surprisingly they never reached the Top 5 again after this song, something noticed about groups like Steps and S Club 7 is that the women led the hits, that’s just an observation, the men did have their moments in the sun, but the women carried the bulk.
