I love the music of Johnny O’Keefe, first heard his music as a toddler and just went from there.

She Wears My Ring

‘She Wears My Ring’ doesn’t have the Johnny O’Keefe wild energy but it is perhaps one of his finest works, I particularly like the part where he sings

This tiny ring is a token of tender emotion
An endless pool of love that’s as deep as the ocean
She swears to wear it with eternal devotion
That’s why I sing, because she wears my ring

He really puts his voice into the song and so this one is a favourite of mine.

Sing, Sing, Sing

Sing, Sing, Sing was a TV show that Johnny O’Keefe hosted, it was also a song that he famously performed at Sunbury in 1973, the unexpected success story of the music festival, this song makes me feel good.

Move Baby Move

A number one hit for Johnny, it’s catchy and that’s what I love about a song, the catchier the better and the music is perfect for the song.

Shout (Parts 1 & 2)

Perhaps the song he is most famous in Australia for, the cover of the Isley Brothers hit showed Johnny at his energetic best, this version of the same performance is of higher quality but unable to be shared like above.

It is the perfect source of material to study Johnny at his finest, the way he moves on stage, high energy, it is a shame that wireless technology wasn’t around for him in 1959, it would have amped things up even more.

This song actually peaked at No. 2, the only song of his to reach that particular number as eight songs hit number one.

So Tough

‘So Tough’ another great one, I hope somebody gets hold of a higher quality version, if it actually exists as who knows when it comes to Australian TV history, Johnny had two goes at this song, the first in 1958 hit a peak of No. 16 and the re-recording in 1972 done better with a peak of No. 7.

This is a live performance which is cool, he’s singing and move around the people dancing, great co-ordination.

Don’t You Know (Pretty Baby)

‘Don’t You Know’ is a great song, gets you into a good mood but the nice part of this music video is that you get to have a look at early 1960’s Australian TV, so much of it was wiped so every little bit is precious.

I Thank You

Another classic of Johnny’s unfortunately in this video he had the episode closing spot which means the sponsors were thanked mid-song but thankfully we got uninterrupted tapes, CD’s, vinyl and MP3’s.

She’s My Baby

She’s My Baby, the chorus was probably sung to many Australian kids in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, I know for me it was changed to ‘He’s My Baby’, it is how I got to know the music of Johnny O’Keefe

These are my favourite Johnny O’Keefe songs and there is probably a half dozen more songs that could be chosen.
