When I was in Year 12, I went by the local music store and saw a two for $30 promotion and so I just had to buy the Top Gun Motion Picture Soundtrack, the Special Expanded Edition.
It starts off with Kenny Loggins hit ‘Danger Zone‘ and followed swiftly by Cheap Trick’s ‘Mighty Wings‘ back to Kenny Loggins with ‘Playing with the Boys‘, Teena Marie’s ‘Lead Me On‘.
The big hit ‘Take My Breath Away‘ by Berlin is next followed by ‘Hot Summer Nights’ by Miami Sound Machine, ‘Heaven in Your Eyes‘ by Loverboy, ‘Destination Unknown‘ by Marietta.
Closing out the original Soundtrack was ‘Top Gun Anthem‘ by Harold Faltermeyer and Steve Stevens.
The special expanded edition added some important tracks, ‘(Sittin’ On) The Dock of The Bay‘ by Otis Redding, ‘Memories‘ by Harold Faltermeyer, ‘Great Balls of Fire‘ by Jerry Lee Lewis, ‘You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling‘ by The Righteous Brothers and the 12’ version of ‘Playing with the Boys‘ by Kenny Loggins.
‘Memories’ is the saddest recording of them all, that was from the scene where Goose gets killed in the accident.
Can one pick an ultimate favourite from the fifteen tracks? Probably not as there is so much choice from the classics like ‘You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feeling’ to ‘Take My Breath Away’.
If I had to choose one, I would choose ‘You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling’ by The Righteous Brothers, many have sung that song, but nobody can top that performance by Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield.
